Main Services in Whittier California
1. Dental Checkups and Teeth Cleaning
Usually there are two parts to your dental checkups; the examination and the professional cleaning. We usually take x-rays once each year to detect any cavities between your teeth. Our dentists will also check for plaque and tartar on the surface of your teeth.
Most dentists recommend twice each year profession cleaning and checkups to remove any buildup of plaque and halt any developing problems before they get worse. Some people who have more serious oral health issues may require more frequent visits.
2. Teeth Fillings And Repairs
Most tooth decay can be treated with a filling. Those who have tooth decay that get annual check-ups are more likely to need a filling than a root canal. Above gum disease, tooth decay seems to be the most common culprit for oral disease.
A filling requires restorative material. Porcelain is the most common material used as it closely matches the color of the tooth. Dentists are more likely to use silver amalgam on cavities in baby teeth. It is cheaper and the child will lose the tooth anyway.
The cavity is corrected by drilling out the decay with a dental tool. Most patients receive Novocaine or another local anesthetic before the procedure to numb the mouth. Novocaine becomes optional when a patient has a small cavity as these can typically be filled with little pain. The filling is then gently put into the hole the drill created. A special light is then used to harden the material.
3. Dental Crowns and Caps
Crowns and caps are commonly installed for two reasons. They are used after a root canal is done to restore the look and function of the tooth or to fix a tooth that has been chipped. Dental crowns and caps are most commonly made from porcelain. Our dentist will take a mold of the tooth and then send it to a manufacturer who will make a permanent copy of it that your dentists will install. We will then place it over the impaired tooth with cement on it to make it adhere. A special light will be used to bind the crown and tooth together. It isn’t uncommon for the dentists to have to shape the tooth or crown a little to make it a perfect fit.
4. Root Canals
A patient who fails to have a cavity corrected may need a root canal. Our dentists will use tools to remove the pulp and nerve of the tooth that is located in the root of the tooth. The space is then filled and sealed. Patients are fitted with a temporary crown and come back in a few weeks to get a permanent one.
5. Tooth Extractions
Extractions are done when the tooth cannot be saved. On occasion, permanent teeth may need to be removed to have an orthodontic procedure.
A dentist may give general anesthesia as this procedure is pretty invasive. A dentists will have to cut away some of the gum and bone tissue that covers the tooth. Then, forceps are used to remove the tooth completely. It is done gently by rocking the tooth back and forth. It’s similar to the way that a child pools out a baby tooth. Some patients choose to get a implant to replace the missing tooth. Others choose to get dentures.
6. Teeth Whitening
Dentists also perform a lot of cosmetic procedures. The most common is teeth whitening. A protective layer of gel is placed over the teeth. A rubber shield is placed to protect the gums. Then, bleach is placed on the teeth and often left for twenty minutes to an hour. It should not hurt if you have no teeth or gums problems.
Many Other Procedures
Our Whittier dentist has a lot of weapons in their arsenal to help heal the dental problems people develop. Dentists also perform implants, place sealants and dentures, bond teeth, and place bridges. Call our office to see if you need any of these procedures and learn more about cosmetic ones.
